The origins of mermaid legends come from Syria around 1000 B.C. where the goddess Atargatis dove into the sea to take the form of a fish, but the powers that be would not allow her to give up her great beauty, so they only allowed her bottom half to became a fish keeping her top half in human form.

As most myths do… this tale became altered over the years, only to be found in later tales such as Homer’s “The Odyssey.”  In this tale, the mermaid like creatures, known as Sirens, would lure sailors to their deaths.
